This book is divided predominantly into three sections: 1) South Asia (India and Pakistan), 2) Central Asia (Kazakhstan), and 3) the Middle East (Saudi Arabia and Iran). In each chapter the author gives historical background of Chinese involvement in the region, current domestic politics that Chinese involvement may impact, and regional rivalries that the Chinese may exacerbate or improve. Informative writing with little to no opinion or political bias. Strongly recommend for anybody interested in learning more about the Belt and Road Initiative. Daniel Markey explains in a very readable manner. The insights he gives helped me to better understand how it is not only the big countries that are deciding whether China's western push will succeed but also local politics. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Quinn McCord -- This One Was Worth the Wait! : Sometimes sequels are worth the wait. Just as it took 7 long years after the film "Alien" was released to produce the even more impressive "Aliens", we finally have a follow-up to Dr. Markey's now-classic 2013 book "No Exit from Pakistan." A recent reading of his new work,"China's Western Horizon," has put to rest any doubts I might have had that the intervening years were well-spent. As was its predecessor, this book is well-researched, using both traditional academic methods plus reports from formal and informal meetings and conversations with knowledgeable sources. China's relations with its western neighbors -- perhaps a niche subject to this point -- has long been due a full, up-to-date examination, and it's hard to imagine another book giving a better service to this topic. As was true with "No Exit," the text itself is surprisingly readable.... with items of interest both to laymen and experts in international relations. Although lavishly footnoted, the research never interferes with the flow of the text, which is always clear, even-handed, and never overly-academic. Anyone with even a passing interest in the subject would be well-served by picking up this new analysis of an increasingly important region of the world. (As a side note, although I still recommend "No Exit" and have referred to this book as its sequel, it's by no means necessary to read that book prior to this new one. Each stands on its own as a separate examination of related, though different, issues. So on that level, one is reminded of the classic 1987 horror film "Evil Dead 2", which, despite its title, is not diminished an iota by anyone's failure to have seen the first movie in that series. Fans of 1980's movies will also appreciate the brief appearance in this book of the Manchurian chieftain Nurhaci, whose remains feature prominently in the opening of "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom".) What China will succeed, or fail, at in the broader Middle East (Iran, Pakistan, Central Asia, etc.) will not only impact those regions but it will also have a direct bearing on American interests in that part of the world. Markey, in a very researched and well-sourced book that is accessible, provides a fascinating in-depth look at China's performance so far in West Asia and what its record tell us about Beijing's ability to one day become the global hegemon. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Jonathon Sine -- Non-conventional look at China's Influence : The flow and tempo of the book, sprinkled with useful anecdotes, makes for an easy reading experience–which isn't always the case in a book as cogently/methodically argued and heavily researched/sourced as this. There are also a ton of China-related books out there right now, and many are not worth reading. This book, however, provides a uniquely useful analysis, looking both at Beijing's ambitions and the ground-level reality of how Beijing's growing influence is, and will continue to, play into domestic policies in its perimeter countries. If by "China's Western Horizon" the author means the western neighbors of China then several "Stan" countries are missing. If he implies China's relationship with "the West" then by concentrating on the perspective of the US alone he has neglected the EU as an important component.
